What Are Peptide Companies? (Introduction)

Before we get into the economic aspect of peptide stocks, let’s learn a little about the molecule. Peptides are essentially small proteins that can engage with various receptors in the body.

They play a crucial role in the biological process and can be naturally occurring (in protein-rich foods) or synthetically produced for research and therapeutic applications.

Some popular peptides are insulin, collagen, growth hormones, oxytocin, and endorphins. Peptides offer various potential health benefits, making them attractive for various medical and wellness applications.

  • Reduced risk of chronic diseases: Some peptides reduce the risk of diabetes and cancer.
  • Muscle growth and recovery: Certain peptides are popular among athletes because they may help stimulate muscle growth, promote fat loss, and improve exercise performance and recovery.
  • Cardiovascular health: Managing blood pressure
  • Anti-aging: Peptides are used for anti-aging and skin-repairing.
  • Antioxidants and anti-inflammatories: Protect cells and reduce inflammation.
  • Antimicrobial: Some peptides can help fight various infections.

A few side effects occur, but they are far from life-threatening. However, keep in mind that peptides are not equally effective for everyone.

  • Increased appetite
  • Elevated blood sugar
  • Fluid retention
  • Allergies

Peptide Companies Applications

So far, we have learned that peptides can have various health benefits, but that’s not all. Their benefits can also be applied to various other industries.

  • Pharmaceuticals: Peptides are increasingly important in the pharmaceutical industry, with dozens in active clinical development. They are used to treat cancer, cardiovascular diseases, metabolic disorders such as obesity, and infectious diseases.
  • Foods: Bioactive peptides are increasingly incorporated into functional foods and dietary supplements.
  • Cosmetics: The cosmetic industry uses peptides for their anti-aging and skin-repairing properties. New synthetic peptides are being developed for more targeted skincare benefits, such as anti-inflammation and pigmentation.
  • Agriculture: Peptides are used as biopesticides and growth promoters in agriculture. They enhance crop growth and yields and help protect against various bacteria.
  • Biotechnology: Many biotech companies work with peptides to develop vaccines and drugs. More on that below.

Peptide Companies Breakdown

The US has the largest market share in the peptide therapeutics industry. In 2024, the North American market size was estimated at $18.3B, which is expected to grow in the years and decades.

On the other hand, Asia is expected to be the fastest-growing market. China, Japan, India, Australia, and South Korea are showing increasing demand due to expanding healthcare infrastructure and rising awareness about peptide-based treatments.

Thankfully for investors, many public multinational companies are incorporating peptide research and commercialization in their pipelines.

Smaller biotech companies also conduct valuable research in this field. Let’s examine a few peptide stock companies that you might consider trading.

Novo Nordisk A/S (NYSE: NVO)

Novo Nordisk is a global company that specializes in pharmaceutical product research, development, production, and marketing. The company’s primary focus is diabetes and obesity treatments. If you’ve heard of Wegovy and Ozempic, they’re behind these two drugs.

Thanks to a recent $6B investment to expand its facility in Denmark, NVO will look to expand its R&D pipeline and improve weight loss and obesity-related drugs.

Some of NVO’s drugs are still in Phase 1 and 2, but there will likely be new positive developments (hopefully!) for the drugmaker in future years.

Eli Lilly And Co (NYSE: LLY)

Next on the list is Eli Lilly, which develops, manufactures, and markets pharmaceutical medicines for diabetes, obesity, cancer, and other medical conditions worldwide. It has entered into multiple collaborations to advance its peptide-based drug delivery systems.

In December 2022, Lilly announced a research collaboration and license agreement with PeptiDream, a Japanese biopharmaceutical company, to discover and develop novel peptide drug conjugates. The two companies have had a long-standing relationship since 2013.

Eli Lilly also developed a facility in Ireland to manufacture synthetic peptides more efficiently and reliably. It has pioneered a hybrid manufacturing approach, but I’ll spare you the technical details as I am no expert in this field. The company is well-positioned for new advancements in peptides and other pharmaceutical breakthroughs.

Pfizer (NYSE: PFE)

After the pandemic, Pfizer may not be everyone’s favorite company, but from an economic perspective, it remains a serious pharma and biotech company.

It has a serious candidate for obesity and type 2 diabetes treatment (danuglipron). Pfizer also collaborates with PeptiDream to develop various peptide-based therapeutics.

From a stock market perspective, Pfizer is far from my favorite stock; let’s be honest, it’s a little boring. However, it has an attractive dividend yield and is a solid value stock.

Peptides

AstraZeneca (NASDAQ: AZN)

Next on the list of peptide stocks is another beloved pandemic stock. AstraZeneca has collaborated with various companies to develop novel peptide therapeutics, such as ProteinQure.

They are also interested in the molecule’s benefits in treating skin conditions such as eczema (with Carocell Bio) and respiratory disorders (with EvoRx Technologies).

AstraZeneca seems to have a few peptide treatment applications in its current pipeline. Unfortunately, it takes years to develop a drug and then pass all the regulatory hurdles. It might take a long time for any of these drugs to be approved and available to the public.

Rhythm Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: RYTM)

We continue with some smaller companies. Rhythm Pharmaceuticals is a biopharmaceutical company that develops therapies for rare genetic obesity diseases.

The company’s lead product, IMCIVREE, is a peptide that helps patients with specific genetic deficiencies control hunger and manage weight. The company is also collaborating with various academic institutions to advance the field of peptide therapeutics.

Rhythm’s Phase 3 clinical trials are promising. The company is at the forefront of research for rare diseases, so its stock price is near its all-time high. If the trials and collaborations are successful, the company could reach new heights in the upcoming quarters.

Ascendis Pharma A/S (NASDAQ: ASND)

We conclude this peptide stocks list with Ascendis Pharma, a biopharmaceutical company focused on developing innovative therapies to address significant unmet medical needs, particularly in endocrinology and oncology. It uses its proprietary TransCon platform to develop various drugs based on peptides.

Ascendis’ stock has been very volatile in the last couple of years, as have many biopharma stocks. It is a risky play, but the company has a few interesting drugs in its pipeline. These drugs will either make or break the company.

Plenty of other peptide companies exist, both public and private. Each has its specialty, and its products appeal to different groups.

Final Thoughts: Peptide Companies

Many pharma companies have shown increased interest in peptides and their health benefits. They are trying to incorporate the molecule into their various drugs, especially for obesity, weight loss, cancer, and other rare and common diseases.

There aren’t any companies trading on US stock exchanges that specialize only in peptides. In general, companies have an extensive pipeline with many different drugs going through various stages.

Numerous multinational and smaller pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical companies successfully compete on the stock market. Please do not trade any of the securities on this Peptide companies list unless you know how to trade.
